Reading Interests

I am a compulsive and diverse reader. I used to keep a reading journal online; however, I just don't have time to keep it up anymore (though I still read)

Among my favorite authors are:
  • Honoré de Balzac
  • John Dos Passos
  • Fyodor Dostoevsky
  • Franz Kafka
  • Marcel Proust
  • Tom Robbins
  • Richard Russo
  • Dylan Thomas
  • Kurt Vonnegut
  • Roger Zelazny

Cooking

I enjoy cooking very much ... I even bake. This section needs to be fleshed out when I've more time. For now it includes two things:
  • A link to Alton Brown's website,
  • And my current kitchen wish-list:
    • A decent Dutch oven (still investigating)
    • A decent baking stone (still investigating)
    • A 9" by 3" springform cake pan
    • A decent pepper mill (the Unicorn Magnum Plus for example)
    • Plunger measuring cups (yes, like AB's)
    • A salt silo (okay, yes ... again, like Alton's)

Games

I occasionally play a variety of games. Among the games I enjoy are those listed below.

Go Other Games
  • Diplomacy
  • Various role-playing games (e.g., Ars Magica, D&D, GURPS, etc.)
  • Various board games (e.g., Settlers of Catan, Take it easy, etc.)
  • Some traditional card games (e.g., Hearts, Cribbage, etc.)

Juggling

I've recently learned to juggle ... and I've become addicted.

Music

Music is a deep passion of mine, both playing it and listening to it. I have played guitar since 1982, though I still have much to learn. The following lists will give you some idea about my musical tastes.

Some of my favorite Jazz artists and sites: Some of my Pop/Rock interests: Some of my Blues/Motown interests:
  • James Brown
  • Eric Clapton
  • Robert Cray
  • Arethra Franklin
  • Buddy Guy
  • B.B. King

Other Media Indulgences

For good or for naught, I do often indulge in less interactive hobbies. For some idea of my TV and radio tastes, see the following.
  • NPR
  • Heroes
  • Doctor Who
  • Torchwood
  • Hikaru no Go

Evolutionary Computation

Evolutionary computation is not just a part of my career, but it is also a source of interest on a more personal level. Thus, I include it here (as well as some other science-related interests of mine).
