{"id":35,"date":"2008-08-27T11:48:16","date_gmt":"2008-08-27T16:48:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tesseract.org\/go-orlando\/?p=35"},"modified":"2008-08-27T11:48:16","modified_gmt":"2008-08-27T16:48:16","slug":"new-semester-new-members","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tesseract.org\/go-orlando\/2008\/08\/27\/new-semester-new-members\/","title":{"rendered":"New semester, new members?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2008 Fall semester at UCF began this week, and (by coincidence or not) the club saw a large block of potential new members attending last night. \u00a0I hope they will all return.<\/p>\n<p>It occurred to me that it might be helpful to mention a few resources to those new to the game of Go. \u00a0\u00a0I jotted a few things here, but I encourage any other members to leave comments on this post with their own ideas (assuming anyone other than me reads this site).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve found Janice Kim&#8217;s book series very good for getting started. They are easy and quick reads, and even looking at the first volume should jump-start a beginner quite a bit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Learn to Play Go\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Learn-Play-Go-Masters-Ultimate\/dp\/0964479613\/ref=cm_lmf_tit_1\" target=\"_blank\">Learn to Play Go: A Master&#8217;s Guide to the Ultimate Game (Volume I)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Ms. Kim also has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.samarkand.net\/Academy\/learn_go\/overview.html\" target=\"_blank\">a few basic lessons available for free<\/a> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.samarkand.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Samarkand<\/a> website<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usgo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">AGA<\/a>&#8216;s website has a downloadable edition of the very famous pamphlet &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usgo.org\/usa\/waytogo\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Way To Go<\/a>&#8220;, as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usgo.org\/promotion\/PromotionalKit.html\" target=\"_blank\">other online resources for learning the game<\/a><\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s also quite a bit at <a href=\"http:\/\/gobase.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">GoBase<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>At the club meeting, we also discussed a few places to go to play the game online:<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gokgs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">KGS<\/a> is a very popular go server with people of all strengths<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s a Florida &#8220;room&#8221; on KGS where you are likely to &#8220;see&#8221; other members of our club<\/li>\n<li>A couple of us play on a turn-based \/ correspondence server called <a href=\"http:\/\/online-go.nainwak.org\" target=\"_blank\">OGS<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Another, popular real-time server is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pandanet.co.jp\/English\/\" target=\"_blank\">IGS<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Most of us suggest avoiding sites like Yahoo Games<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>If you are very new to the game, you might consider downloading one of the many go clients that have AI engines in them (CGoban with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gnu.org\/software\/gnugo\/download.html\" target=\"_blank\">GnuGo<\/a> is very common). \u00a0Most of these players are not particularly strong, and once you get used to the game may actually impeded your playing, but could be good when you are just starting out.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>And, of course, keep coming to the club! \u00a0I think nearly all of us are happy to help others learn the game. \u00a0I know one important reason I go is to learn more! \u00a0I hope all players will feel welcome, regardless of how new to the game they are.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2008 Fall semester at UCF began this week, and (by coincidence or not) the club saw a large block of potential new members attending last night. \u00a0I hope they will all return.
