Summary

The original group consisted of Lupisac, Vahdric, Ulfgar, Teira, Krish (NPC), and Vesper (NPC). Each member of the group received a summons from Ballod Stonejumper, a local dwarven businessman. When the group met at his home, he informed them that he had a job for them. He wanted them to deliver a message to Abbot Bidwell in the small town of Pensford, several days journey to the north. In addition, a wizard by the name of Magnus (who actually chose the party for Ballod) sent a note with Lupisac for the Abbot.

The group left for Pensford, a trip that takes five days. On the second evening, they stop at a church in the town of Burcud. Beneath the church is a series of caverns containing a tomb that the church’s priest believed to be that of Talas, a hero of the Church. The priest turns up missing and the group goes into the caverns. Ulfgar dies in an unfortunate encounter with paralysis-invoking ghouls. By "coincidence", another barbarian, Throndar (looking disturbingly like Ulfgar) shows up at the church and joins the group. Here they find a library with two books, one a biography of Allator and the other a mysterious book. Scanning the volume, Lupisac learns that Allator was an emperor of a great empire millennia ago. He also finds a reference to Allator’s visiting the dwarven citadel being built around a stone obelisk. From the text, he surmises that the obelisk is the one in Blackstone and that the dwarven is the one from the legends of Blackstone. From this, he learns that the obelisk is ancient even when the dwarves built their citadel, making it much older than previously believed.

Searching further, the party finds a corpse with a strange ring that does not radiate magic. Lupisac puts on the ring and finds that he can see all sorts of symbols and such on the walls. The ring also permits the group to pass through the door to the tomb. There the group finds a set of sarcophagi, but they (wisely) choose not to disturb them.

Lupisac succeeds in opening the mysterious tome, which was locked closed with a metal clasp, but the pages are all blank. Vesper leaves the group, saying vaguely that she has been summoned. The group meets Morgan and Myev on the road. Additionally, the party sees several large group of orcs and goblins. These caravans are clearly whole tribes relocating in lands that are held by humans. The group guesses that something in the Shadowed Mountains is pushing the humanoids to leave.

The next day, the group proceeds onto Pensford. Along the way, the group encounters an evil priest trapped in the form of a devil (a Kyton). Although the devil is destroyed, Throndar is killed. Unable to raise him, they carry their fallen comrade’s body with them.

When they arrive at Pensford, they find the town in the control of a group of goblins, led by Gillok (chieftain) and Ghol (shaman). They soon free the town, but the town’s tower is still held by the goblins. Lupisac unwisely charges in, confident in his invisibility, and is captured. The group negotiates with the goblins and they vacate the tower. The group pursues the goblins and finally free Lupisac. Lupisac’s possessions are recovered, but his magical items are taken by the goblins. Additionally, the ring he retrieved from Talas’ tomb is taken, but by the time the group returns to Blackstone, it has somehow returned to his finger.

The group also finds Abbot Bidwell. They read to him Ballod’s letter and it tells him about Bishop Galloran in Mairdell who has turned to evil. The letter bids Bidwell to travel to a tavern called Orc’s Whore. There they will meet Mother Novomira, an abbottess in Hallowed Tree. Lupisac opens the letter from Magnus, but it says only that the letter is for Bidwell’s eyes only. Since he is blind and unable to read it, no one yet knows what it says.

The group returns to Blackstone. Just outside of town, Throndar has a vision of Casair. Following this, Throndar is miraculously risen from the dead. While in Blackstone, the group investigates the great monolith which gives the town its name. With the ring, Lupisac sees all sorts of symbols that he did not see earlier. He also sees a door in the base of the pillar. Returning at night, the party enters the door and quickly find themselves in a tesseract, a multi-dimensional space. They are greeted by a man who refers to them as seekers of the Sword of Ashrek. He tells them to retrieve all the pieces of the Palindrom. The group does so, in the process finding a girl named Ravella. She says that her parents left her many years earlier. She gives Lupisac a staff that collapses into a small canister when a command word is spoken. It belonged to her father, a wizard named Torrall. It is clearly magical, but fails to radiate magic, just as the ring and the mysterious tome did. Upon returning all the pieces of the Palindrom to the man, he party finds itself freed from the tesseract. When they exit the door in the monolith, the symbols are now clearly visible for all to see. The group decides to return to their rooms in the inn quickly, before anyone notices the monolith and connects it with them. The next day, while passing through town, they confirm that the townspeople see the glowing symbols of the monolith.

The group then decides to return to the tomb of Talas. They had found a set of sarcophagi and think that perhaps the Sword of Ashrek may be found there. When they get to the sarcophagi, only Lupisac enters. He removes the cover of the central sarcophagus and finds a perfectly preserved corpse holding a sword. He touches the sword and has a vision of a man, the man in the sarcophagus, on a throne. He identifies himself as Allator, thus indicating that this tomb is actually that of Allator, not Talas.

The group then returns to Blackstone. After much time spent investigating the obelisk, Lupisac finally finds four strange sigils near the top of the obelisk. Touching these in sequence, the obelisk glows and the group find themselves suddenly standing in a great hall. At one end is the throne Lupisac had seen while the other is open. The group looks out onto a great city, their vantage point being high above the rest of the city. They then see a dragon approaching them, with a human rider. Quickly they recognize him as Allator.

Allator questions them, then calls his guards. He then sends them to meet with one of his wizards. During the conversation with the wizard, the group determines that they have been transported back in time. They see that in the past had two moons (in the present there is only one). The magic the wizard uses differs from that which the groups knows, although no one knows how. The ancient magic has two sources, the Sword of Ashrek (which is the obelisk) and the Pit of Sollux. The Pit is the source of evil magic, the sword the source of good. The wizard also identifies the staff of Torrall and indicates that such a wizard did exist, but perished four hundred years earlier than the present time. At his recommendation, Lupisac reverses the sequence on the obelisk to send them back to their own time.

Ballod then contacts the group and asks them to take Bidwell to Hallowed Tree to meet Novomira. Hallowed Tree is about five days to the southeast. Along the way, at the town of Ashvan, the group comes upon a group of bandits attacking the townspeople. Dispatching them, they then learn that the bandit attack was actually just a diversion. Other bandits had hit the church, stealing the haft of the legendary magic object, the Spear of Loghain. Following the bandits, they come to the old castle of the Loghain family. They find an old demon, still in residence and attempting to reopen a gateway to bring others of his kind. Using the spear, the group dispatches the demon and ends the curse of the Loghain family.

Proceeding onto Hallowed Tree, the group meets up with Novomira in a tavern called the Orc’s Whore. She tells them that Bishop Galloran of Mairdell is seeking an artifact called Daggor’s Goblet. This goblet was made long ago from the skull of a dragon for a giant named Daggor. Consequently, it is quite large, as big as a cauldron. And it has the power to control the minds of an entire kingdom. She has learned that the path to the artifact lies through Pilfar’s Tomb. Pilfar was a great hero of the Church. Novomira takes Bidwell with her, stating she will take him to her abbey. Instead, someone from the group follows and sees that she takes her to another building. They see her and Bidwell talking to a third man, one that is unrecognized.

The group goes to the tomb. At the beginning, they encounter a sign that says, "None evil shall enter." Morgan hesitates, causing Vahdric to cast a detect evil spell and thus identify Morgan as being evil. After much discussion, the group continues as a whole, although Vahdric continues to distrust Morgan. At the end of the tomb, the group encounters a spirit that tells them to find the Crystal Key to take them to Daggor’s Goblet. They are then teleported to the orcish Kingdom of Korrok.

The group meets Count Bruog, who possesses the key. He agrees to trade it for the Rod of Ulbrik, which is in the hands of Callima. The group agrees to the bargain. They travel to the town of Florrog. While Myev attempts to secure lodgings, Vahdric gets in a fight with an orcish mercenary. When the mercenary begins to lose, he calls for help. The innkeeper and guards arrive. Vahdric is hidden by Lupisac, but when it looks like that things will not end peacefully, Lupisac drops a fireball. This kills the innkeeper and the mercenary. Vahdric and Throndar then kill the other guards. The group quickly makes its way to Callima’s tower on her island. Here Morgan gives her a message saying they wish to negotiate for the Rod of Ulbrik. When the group returns they are confronted by sixteen orcs wanting to arrest them. Half the group (Lupisac, Morgan, Myev, and Krish) agrees to surrender, but Vahdric and Throndar do not. They kill the guards. The group then invades the tower. They drive Callima away and retrieve the Rod of Ulbrik. The group learns that the rod is similar to a rod of rulership, but that it has double effect on orcs.

On the way back to the Count, the group encounters a mad priest. They kill him, but succeed in capturing a golem.

Reaching Count Bruog, they try to steal the Crystal Key but this fails. Lupisac and Vahdric then make the trade, giving him the Rod for the Key.

Lupisac uses identify on the Key and is given a vision of a mountain with a red sky. The group briefly returns to Blackstone, then moves on to the Grey Isle. Lupisac introduces the group to his mentor, Greyson the Wise. Using magic, he is able to establish that the mountain is on the 263rd layer of the Abyss. He agrees to send the party there, but only in exchange for Lupisac’s service. While on the Gray Isle, the group learns that King Aldred of the Kingdom of the White Sword led a group of armed men in a slaughter of a small elven settlement just outside of Draghold. Only one elven child survived this slaughter, and the elves are currently in council to determine what response to have to this atrocity.

The group travels to the Abyss and after some effort secure the Goblet.
